10 sure-fire ways to motivate your team in 2020

Once your out-of-office has been turned off, the Christmas decorations have been taken down and there are just one or two unwanted Celebrations left rattling around in the tin, you know it’s official – the festive season is well and truly over.

For some, January is a fresh start with endless possibilities and the chance to set new goals and resolutions. But many of us are reluctantly hit by the January blues and after a week or two of pure indulgence, it can be hard to get back into the swing of things.

When they’re back at their desks, it can be hard to motivate your team – and unsurprisingly, just one approach won’t work for everyone. I have a few suggestions to get the ball rolling again:

1. Express gratitude

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a finished report that’s landed on your desk two weeks early, a new business deal secured or simply a basic task completed to an exceedingly high standard – regularly thank your team members for their hard work.

2. Think outside the box

Company culture and a pleasant work environment are incredibly important for your employees’ happiness and productivity levels. It’s easy to get caught up in daily duties, but 87 per cent of employees would like a healthier office environment.

3. Emphasise their impact, not their job

Employees shouldn’t feel like they’re completing tasks to meet their job description – they should be genuinely making an impact on the people and environment surrounding them.

4. Agree on goals

It’s been proven that employees whose managers involve them in goal setting are three and a half times more likely to be engaged, yet just 21 per cent of employees would say that they’re being measures against performance metrics which they can control. So, before you set goals and then share them with your employees, ask for their feedback and the barriers that may stop them from achieving them.

5. Offer solutions

It’s easy to spot problems, but fixing them isn’t always so straightforward. When you’re unable to provide a solution, identify another source that may be able to help.

6. Be a coach, not a boss

Schedule one-to-one meetings regularly, ask your team plenty of questions and allocate straightforward action points. Act like a supportive team member, not a boss, and your employees will be more willing to follow your lead – even when it feels like the January blues are holding them back.

7. Be transparent

If the company is meeting or exceeding their targets, let your team know. If it’s not, do the same. By keeping everyone in the loop, they’ll be more inclined to push towards achieving your shared goals.

8. Establish trust

Nurturing genuine relationships with your staff will not only boost morale in the office, but it leads to company loyalty and staff retention too.

9. Give them a purpose

For Millennials in particular, this one is vital. The figures on their payslip aren’t the be-all-and-end-all of how they measure their enjoyment of the job – they also want to be making a difference to the world. When briefing for more menial tasks, associate them with how they will contribute to the work of the wider team.

10. Celebrate milestones

Birthdays, professional anniversaries and significant achievements all deserve to be celebrated and are a great opportunity for some team-building time too.
