CV template: what you need to include to create a winning CV

In your search for the perfect job, first impressions are everything. Whether you’ve recently kickstarted your professional career or have a long employment history to show, your chances of getting a call from an employer of choice depend on how you present your skills and experience in your professional resume. The good news is, you don’t have to start from scratch: below, we’ve put together a CV template that includes guidance on what to include to ensure hiring managers take notice of the value you have to add to their organisation.
A killer introduction
This is it: the first glimpse an employer will get in to your value as a candidate. With that in mind, the last thing you want to do is rehash the same sentences the hiring manager has seen a hundred times. Instead, your personal statement should be a short representation of your ambitions and expertise; it should aim to give the hiring manager a snapshot of your skillset and a strong idea of what you can offer.
A showcase of your skills
When skimming through a pile of CVs from potential candidates, hiring managers are on the lookout for applicants whose resumes reflect the requirements of the role. The employment history section is therefore an opportunity for you to pick out the key skills that you developed within each role and present the employment experiences you believe have prepared you for this position. If a lack of experience is making your CV look empty, don’t hesitate to draw on unpaid positions, internships and apprenticeships: if anything, these will serve as examples of your drive and ambition.
A targeted keyword approach
Many employers today use candidate software to review and shortlist potential applicants based on algorithms that match the keywords in the job description to those in your CV. It’s therefore essential to review the job description and ensure that your resume includes many of the key skills or technical requirements, such software or systems knowledge, academic credentials or language fluency. Just like when you type a search into Google, your aim with these programmes is to ensure that your profile is pulled within search results, so make sure that you customise your CV for each and every opportunity.
A nod to your achievements
Beyond daily duties, your employment history should centre around the accomplishments you achieved during your time in each role. Whether it’s exceeding your own targets, contributing in a key project or playing a leading role in solving an ongoing business challenge, being able to quantify your experience with a few notable achievements can undoubtedly help you to stand out against the competition. If you’ve got the numbers to back it up, even better.
An insight into your education
In our CV template, you will find a space to list your vocational qualifications. These should feature in reverse chronological order, with your most recent grades, certifications or diplomas at the top. Where you are in your career and which qualifications you have gained will determine what to include in this section – for instance, if you have accumulated several years of experience following a bachelor’s degree or another form of higher qualification, it won’t be necessary to list your GCSE results. If, on the other hand, you have just started your career, listing these results can be beneficial in supporting your application.
A note on references
Unless asked directly, you don’t have to list your referees on your resumé. However, while it doesn’t feature on our CV template, you should at least leave room to let the employer know you can provide references on request.
