5 Questions an Insurance professional should be ASKING in their Interview
How many times have you sat at the end of an interview where you have displayed capability, technical understanding and your personable character to be stumped by the final question… do you have any questions?
The answer to this question is not “nope, I think you have covered everything….”
Whether you are a seasoned professional or someone who has just entered the Insurance Industry, asking thoughtful and assertive questions during and towards the end of your interview could be the final nail in securing the proverbial “offer-tunity”.
Obvious reasons for utilising this ‘question time’ are that it shows you have been listening and engaged throughout the interview and demonstrates your interest. Also, you’ve been talking about yourself for over an hour and asking a question to your interviewer gives them the opportunity to impart crucial pieces of information that will not only affirm their importance but can provide insight into company culture and progression opportunities in the form of a real-life case study.
So, what to ask?
As with any kind of interview technique the standard advice is to be yourself, ask questions you genuinely want to know the answer to, (within reason; no salary, holiday, sickness, lunchtime requests at this stage!) and questions that will demonstrate your dedication to both your profession and potential company. This blog will aim to outline 5 “well received” questions that can be tailored to your professional circumstance.
1. Why do you like working here?
A simple question, but depending on your desire to probe their answer it can help with rapport building “you love MI reporting…. So do I!” and knowledge about the company culture that may be crucial to your acceptance of the role “flexible benefits etc.”
2. Where do you see the company heading in the next 3 years?
There are 2 reasons why this question can be a hit, firstly it engages the interviewer and their own opinions and secondly it gives you an opportunity to impart your market knowledge, “where do you see the company heading in the next few years? In light of the popularisation of cyber insurance?”
3. What could I do to ensure you reach your company goals?
Presumptive perhaps but incredibly effective as it displays your confidence and dedication to the company progression and also if you are successful it could be a good way to start preparing before you start
4 . How do you differ from your biggest competitor?
If you are interviewing with a number of companies this can be a very useful question as it showcases your awareness of their competitors and also their answer may well sway your opinion on them as a business
5. What long term opportunities do you have available?
This is important to ask if your long-term goals are driven by a certain time frame, as if you are wanting to become a Commercial Team Manager within 2 years and the team manager has only recently been appointed, is this something that will inhibit your progression?
In summary, tailoring these questions to your specific niche will not only convey your competent industry awareness it will give you the gravitas to leave not just a first but a lasting impression.
