A busy, pro-active role, the post holder will need to demonstrate real experience in delivering strong, content led material into national and regional broadcast, print and on-line media. With a strong campaign and media relations background as well as in-depth experience of marketing communications.

Minimum Requirement:

  • Senior professional representative of the Army’s Directorate of Engagement and Communications for Brigade Commanders in relevant regional area, lead for news for one of the Army’s priority themes (People, Purpose, International, Integration, Innovation).
  • Key duties include leading and supervision of virtual teams of civilian and service personnel to deliver on the ground communications activities,
  • Rapid provision and dissemination of communications advice
  • Rapid provision and dissemination of communications advice and guidance to military commanders, units and training establishments with a focus on the relevant areas within the specific team remit.
  • Handling of a wide range of reactive regional news and delivering opportunities for proactive publicity for the Army’s themes including responsibility for keeping lines to take updated in relation to the team’s theme and geographical areas covered and making them available to the wider Army Communications team.
  • Co-ordination and production of news material, organisation of press facilities,
  • Mentoring and training for unit communications officers in partnership with Media Ops
  • Manager of news officers where required and directing military communications colleagues and photographers/content creators for content capture in geographical areas covered within the team.
  • Management of and participation in an out of hours duty roster. This post leads the team in any local geographical media response during crises and emergencies.

Main Job Objectives:

1. Management of news officers and guiding military members of the team

2. Coordination of reactive and proactive communications support as a lead news officer for specific desk (team one, two, three or four).

3. Provide professional communications advice to Command and all staff/personnel, including UPOs, RG, RFCAs and associated agencies. With support from the IDEA team, monitor and report on regional media coverage.

4. Manage and deliver the proactive and reactive news element of communications for the team’s theme and geographical areas where necessary including management and delivery of LTTs when required.

5. You will be liaising with our digital department to upload content onto the British Army website, so familiarity of how digital media and digital news works would be desirable.

6. Production, development and maintenance of effective communications plans when required including planning and implementing media facilities; coordination of all news related content gathering and media arrangements for Army activity specific to the team.

7. Provide liaison with communication branches of other government departments and civic authorities as necessary; provision of media focus for all military operational support to blue light agencies.

8. Participate in an out of hours duty roster and share responsibility for keeping the news grid updated.

9. Deputise for head of news when necessary

10. A working knowledge of how the devolved nations operate within the UK would be desirable to help understand and translate the Army’s relationship within Scotland.
